Leading Innovation

The TMI operates in one of Australia's most dynamic innovation ecosystems, combining education, training and research facilities, mature global and local companies and numerous start-ups. The site is home to companies including Siemens, Zeiss Vision, Voxon Photonics, Zen Energy, MicroX, Advanced Focus, Sage Automation, Azzo Automation, Radical Torque, 3RT, Hydrix, 1414 Degrees, and Simulation Australasia.

“The adoption of digital technologies in South Australia is giving rise to a new generation of manufacturers and highly skilled jobs.”

Professor John Spoehr, Director,
Australian Industrial Transformation Institute, 2018

Technology For Tomorrow

The spectacular Flinders University at Tonsley facility showcases advanced technologies in a network of high technology laboratories. Research in fields as diverse as medical devices, autonomous technologies, renewable energy, smart materials, artificial intelligence, cyber-security, applications of nano-technology and photonics is helping to fuel growth of the industries of the future.

Tomorrow Together

The Flinders at Tonsley facility brings together the Australian Industrial Transformation Institute, Medical Device Research Institute, Flinders Nanoscale Science and Technology, the New Venture Institute and a network of world class laboratories. It is also home to world leading programs of research on industrial transformation and diversification, medical devices, autonomous technologies, renewable energy, smart materials, artificial intelligence, cyber-security, applications of nano-technology and photonics.

Accelerating Industry 4.0

The TMI plays a catalytic role in promoting understanding and application of the Industry 4.0 (i4.0) agenda. Central to accelerating the growth of advanced manufacturing in Australia is continued development and application of i4.0 capabilities including robotics and automation in highly networked and flexible production systems that take advantage of cloud computing. The TMI showcases the latest generation of ‘future factory’ technologies which are revolutionising the way we design and make things. It supports companies to build i4.O capabilities through accredited and non-accredited education and training programs.

The TMI is helping to build higher levels of i4.0 maturity in South Australian industry through peer to peer-based capability building and action research partnerships that substantially increase the number of i4.O use cases in Australia.

The centre-piece of the TMI is South Australia’s first Cyber-physical (CP) Factory — a state of the art i4.0 education, training and research facility. The CP Factory is a ‘Factory of the Future’, showcasing the latest automation, sensor, monitoring and robotic technologies.

“The Future Factory provides a physical embodiement of what has been to date a largely theoretical concept in Australia. These facilties will enable us to interact with the new technologies directly.”
